On may 27, BJP’s spokesperson nupur sharma was on a debate show on Times Now. During the debate , she was putting across her party’s views on the Gyanvapi Masjid issue. If you have Gyanvapip Masjidand the shivling issue . you would know how controversial that issue is. in her argument, nupur sharma mocked islam and prophet Mohammad she justifies her abuse by saying that it was a response to those Muslims who were making fun of shivling. i don’t wish to discuss who said what on that show. Because according to me, that is not the main issue in this controversy.

Very quickly, her clips goes viral on social media and a brouhaha followed.
On june 3, angry Muslims protesters started protests in kanpur against Nupur Sharma. On 5 june, the anger against nupur sharma goes global.
Indian products from stories in gulf contries started being withdrawn. Superstores in kuwait remove indian products from their shelves.
Some middle east governments (Afghanistan, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Tarkey, Maldives, Bahrain, Indonasia, Malaysia) started releasing official statements and asked indian ambassadors for an explanation.This was not surprising given the importance of india’s relationships with the middle east countries.there is several reasons for it the most impoprtant being that many indian citizens work and earn money in these countries.
despite this decision by the BJP, the rage doesn’t stop. some people started demanding legal punishment for nupur sharma, some even calling for her being killed. some of these protests turned voilent too.over 40 police officers were injured across india, while in ranchi , two muslim protesters were also allegedly killed by police.
In Uttar Pradesh , the government decided to bulldoze the houses of the people who were the master mind behind these protests. Javed Mahammed and his daugher afreen fatima have been vocal muslim activists were accused to be the mastermind of the friday riots( june 3, 2022) in prayagraj and their house was demolished.

The forst issue is as for what nupur sharma said, was ir right or wrong ? what nupur sharma said was in hate speech ? blasphemy? should it be allowed, not allowed?
first in terms of context , nupur sharma was trying to make fu of Islam. this is clear. should she be jailed for what she said ?

this opinion might be controversial but i don’t think that there should be legal actions against her for this speech, this is because i believe that making fun of religions or criticizing religions should be a right in a free society nupur sharma has this right. so does a comedian.
now you will say that what about those people who were beaten and put in jail for making fun of hinduism ? i feel what happened with them was wrong.
they had a right to make fun of hinduism but also kown thst wrongs don’t make a right. if they had to suffer , that does not mean that those who criticize islam should also suffer. there should be no room for blasphemy laws in our country. for those who don’t know blasphemy laws state that you can’t make fun of any religion. such laws are enforced in several islamic republics like pakistan. we have seen such laws are applied selectively against minorities in pakistan.
blasphemy is very important for any society because without it, no religion can be reformed. for example , Dr. BR Ambedkar wrote harshly about Hinduism in his book , ” Riddles of Hinduism“.
imagine without blasphemy, our society would still have sati, triple talaq, or even dowry……
BR Ambedkar was definitely someone who believed in criticizing a religions. there is lot that he said in his speeches and writings that are relevant even today.
